The MTEC event in UK is the only remaining automation show in UK
(though a new combination of Drives and Controls and other shows
in May could change that). The Expert Alliance always supports MTEC
and gets involved with workshops explaining how AS-i can help modern
plants and assembly lines. Highlights of the workshops included
the new V3 specification and the SW technology that can revolutionise
the wiring of panel switches and indicators.
Don't worry if you missed the workshop, as the slides accompanying
the presentations are available to download here. (Slide sets not
yet received will be uploaded asap. Please visit again soon.)
1. Andy Verwer, MMU: Introduction to AS-i and 'Hands-on the
Yellow Cable'. (Comment: This was an enjoyable glance at
the basis for AS-i, including a section of Yellow Cable being cast
around the audience, along with slave devices and screwdrivers,
so that a working network could be assembled, including configuring
- which, unfortunately, you can't see happening on these slides!
The benefits of the new V3 specification were also outlined.)
2. Mike Brierley, IDEC: AS-i
SW for cost effective connection of panel switches and indicators.
(Comment: IDEC are one of a handful of companies promoting SW.
If you are using an AS-i network already then adding the cabinet
stuff is easy, with massive wiring savings and some long term benefits
too.)
3. Peter Cheetham, Sigmapi: The Real World Benefits of using
AS-i in Modern Production Lines. (Comment: Peter is an AS-i
evangelist and always provides an entertaining visit to various
production lines his company has worked on. Hard facts are used
to show why AS-i was chosen in each case. The variety may surprise.)
4. Phill Caroll, LC Automation/FSE: Deploying
AS-i in functional Safety Systems in Industry. (Comment:
A look at functional safety in a tricky process using CC-Link, together
with an overview of the Safety at Work technology.)
