Book Warehousing

Books

Siemens AS-Interface technology manages book warehousing at Verlegerdienst, Munich, Germany.

Ordered today, delivered tomorrow, in the book trade customer service is paramount. To provide good customer service you first need well organised stocks and distribution - another case for AS-Interface. The Verlegerdienst (Publisher Services) in Munich certainly came to the right door.

Verlegerdienst keeps more than 15,000 book titles ready to order on 17,000 pallets. They come from over 20 publishing houses and are sent on to 18,000 retail outlets as well as 160,000 subscribers in and outside Germany. That's over 50 tons of books per day - and demand is rising. This requires dependable management with AS-Interface.

AS-Interface connected to PROFIBUS. Four AS-Interface lines cross the field of play at Verlegerdienst: Connected to these are light barriers, BEROs, solenoid valves, contactors etc. - over 120 modules in total. AS-Interface is connected to the higher-level PROFIBUS using two ET200 stations (see photo above) - compact and uncomplicated. Almost 7 metres (80%) of switching cabinet capacity can be saved - creating space for the rest of the plant.

Labeka, Karlsruhe is responsible for the next automation concept and with AS-Interface it has put its money on the logistics of the future. AS-Interface guarantees the highest flexibility today and allows for the requirements of tomorrow. It can be assembled quickly and makes plant maintenance easy - at drastically reduced costs. As an additional challenge, it was only possible to convert to the process line at Verlegerdienst at weekends.

No more cable spaghetti in the plant, no more cable racks or cable ducts - AS-Interface clears up the clutter not only in the switching cabinet but also out in the field.
